“The backups are running” is not the same as “we know we can get the business back.”
A job can finish successfully and still leave you with the wrong backup, the wrong retention, or a restore nobody has practiced. The only useful test is to restore something real and confirm it opens.
Ask for one recent restore
What was restored? When? Where did it go? Did anyone check that the files were usable? How long did it take? Those answers tell you more than a screenshot of green checkmarks.
Then ask what happens if the person who normally handles recovery is unavailable. The instructions, access, and approval path should not exist only in one technician’s memory.
Backups are boring until the day they aren’t. Do the small test while you still have the luxury of choosing the day.
